Arsenal fans look away…here’s a photo you didn’t want to see; Robin van Persie in a Manchester United shirt. Robin van Persie United shirt available here.
It seems Robin van Persie has been given the number 20 for his first season as a United striker. This signing is a bold move by Sir Alex Ferguson and a clear signal of his intent to wrestle the Premier League title back from arch rivals Manchester City.
Ferguson often bemoans the lack of value there is in the current transfer market and the signing of van Persie goes against Ferguson’s and United’s recent transfer policy. Sir Alex is often shipping out players when they reach their late 20’s, and yet here he is paying a reported £24 million for a 29 year old striker with an unfortunate injury record. Have United got value for money? That remains to be seen.
There can be no doubt van Persie had an outstanding season last year and he is a top class striker. United must be hoping he can build on this success and strike up a partnership with Wayne Rooney. United now boast an impressive strike force and must be hoping it will help them to regain the Premier League and progress further in the Champion’s League, after last season’s disappointments. Landmark signings such as this always generate acres of newsprint and adds to the expectancy the start of a new season brings.
