Nike has unveiled Manchester United new home football kit for the 2012-13 season. Available to buy here. It’s fair to say that the bold new design received a mixed reception among Manchester United supporters. However, recently there has been a marked increase in positive comments towards the new shirt design. The checked gingham design was a bold move by the designers at Nike and has taken some getting used to. The fans have now seen the team play in the shirt in pre-season friendlies and have had time to appreciate the new look.
In their press release Nike explain how the new home kit was inspired by Manchester’s industrious past. The iconic gingham check hails from Manchester’s famous cotton mills. The gingham check on the home shirt is in tonal red and the black v-neck gives a contemporary look. Inside the neck Nike have included a graphic that reads, ‘Forged in Industry, Striving For Glory’.
Nike are big on producing environmentally friendly products and the new home kit is manufactured using Nike’s ground-breaking recycled polyester, making it Nike’s most environmentally friendly kit ever produced. Each kit (shirt and shorts) is made using up to thirteen recycled plastic water bottles. This innovative manufacturing process reduces energy consumption by up to 30% compared to manufacturing traditional polyester.
It remains to be seen how popular this new Manchester United home shirt and kit will be with United’s army of fans worldwide. The shirt is available to buy now here.
