This Manchester United away shirt from the 1995-96 season has gone down in history as one of United’s most controversial kits. The shirt was popular amongst the fans despite it’s controversial design and colour, which was primarily grey. However, it’s real claim to fame came in April 1996, when United were playing Southampton and losing 3-0 at half-time. The United manager, Alex Ferguson, forced his players to change strips and blamed the grey tone for the teams poor performance, claiming the players were camouflaged on the pitch by blending into the fans in the background. United still lost the game 3-1 and the kit was withdrawn two years ahead of schedule.
The 1995-96 season was a successful one for the Manchester club as they went onto win the Premier League and FA Cup Double. Eric Cantona was in his pomp and young players such as David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes were just establishing themselves as first team regulars. Whatever did happen to those guys?
